Dasht-e Kavir
Iran conducted a test of the intermediate-range Shihab-3 on 11 August 2004. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly simulated a crisis in which the Iranian leadership ordered the launch of the missile from a military base in central Iran. During the exercise, the Iranian leadership gave orders to a military command and control center for the launch of the missile. This alerted a military base in Dasht-e-Kavir near Isfahan, where a Shihab-3 was "taken out of its silo and installed on a launcher."
Dasht-e Kavir [däsht-EkävEr'] (Great Salt Desert) is in central Iran. Like swirls of paint on an enormous canvas, shallow lakes, mudflats, and salt marshes share the sinuous valleys on Iran's largely uninhabitated Dasht-e Kavir, or Great Salt Desert. This huge basin of interior drainage is named after the kavirs (salt marshes).
